# Companies

The Companies section is designed to organise and manage the entities that sit behind investments.

Companies are particularly useful when generating **Advice Documents**, where holdings need to be grouped or presented under logical company structures rather than individual securities.

#### Key Features

* **Synced Companies**\
  Companies can be automatically synced from the **Investments** database. These are tied directly to the securities, funds, or instruments already in the system.
* **Logical Grouping**\
  Synced Companies allow multiple investments to be grouped under a single logical company (e.g., multiple share classes or managed fund series linked to one manager).
* **Custom Companies**\
  Users can override a synced company or manually create a custom company record. This ensures flexibility in cases where naming, grouping, or branding needs to differ from the synced default.
* **Advice Document Integration**\
  Companies act as the presentational layer in Advice Documents. Instead of displaying raw investment codes, reports can show consistent company names and groupings tailored to end-client communication.

#### Integration with Other Modules

* **Investments**: Companies are mapped to investments to ensure alignment between security-level data and company-level presentation.
* **Advice Documents**: Provides the company grouping and branding that appears in client-facing reports.
* **Portfolios**: Underlying portfolio holdings reference investments, which then roll up into their mapped companies when presented in Advice Documents.

#### Example Use Cases

* A managed fund with multiple APIR codes is grouped under a single company name so that Advice Documents display it consistently.
* A dealer group overrides a synced company to rename it with client-friendly branding.
* An adviser manually creates a custom company for a private asset not held in the synced investment registry.
